The Hospital

Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital, or GOP Hospital as it’s colloquially known, was first established in 1992 as one of the first private health facilities in Turkey. In 2014, it became the affiliated hospital of the Medical Faculty of Yeni Yuzyıl University, and is now formally known as Yeni Yüzyıl University Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital. GOP Hospital received ISO 9001 certification (an international quality management system) in 2007 and was classified a Class A Hospital under the Service Quality Standards in Health Industry established by the Ministry of Health. They’ve maintained this title by undergoing yearly assessments. In 2017, the hospital was also accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI), a not-for-profit, private accrediting body that assesses whether an institution has met global industry standards.

GOP Hospital was built with earthquake-resistant smart building technology and features a central automation system as well as a patient transport system (medical evacuation helicopter landing pad). Since its opening, the doctors and surgeons of GOP Hospital have performed over 60,000 operations and delivered over 22,000 babies. The hospital has a 350-bed capacity and also provides guest houses for patients’ relatives who do not reside in Istanbul. There is a dedicated International Patients Department, assisting patients from abroad with services ranging from medical documentation for insurance to accommodation and transportation. GOP aims to make all patients “feel at home” as much as possible during their time at the hospital.

An interview with Dr. Şen

What is your experience with international patients?
I have been a surgeon for many years and have been working with overseas patients for over 10 years.

What do you love about your job?
What I love about my job is I love to make a difference in people’s lives. To see a patient come back after surgery feeling confident and on top of the world makes me love my job every day.

Why do you think international patients come to you?
First of all, I work in an amazing university hospital which gives my patients comfort and why do they pick me? I am a people’s doctor. I understand what it means to dream of a better body, better shape, better look, and most of my patients have been thinking and dreaming of their planned surgery for years. It’s just great to be a part of their dreams.

Can you tell us about a memorable treatment with which you helped to improve a patient's life?
I must say mummy makeovers make me feel really great inside. I had a mother who had 3 kids. She devoted her life to them as mothers do and she finally had a chance to do something for herself as her kids saved up money for her to have her dream surgery: a tummy tuck, new breasts and to get rid of some fat.

She was so excited and so emotional. After her surgery, she cried with joy and thanked me. She said she could now look in the mirror again without looking away. I am so lucky that I can make that happen for a lady, a mother.
