People dissatisfied with the size and shape of their calf muscles, who avoid wearing clothes that expose their legs are the best candidates for calf implants. When even intensive exercise does nothing to significantly enlarge the muscle in the calf of the leg, implants can correct the problem. Calf implants also correct deformities resulting from nerve diseases or injury that cause muscle deterioration. Those deforming diseases include spina bifida, club foot, and polio. Calf implants are solid, silicone implants used to address problematic areas.

Women and men have different reasons for seeking implants. Women normally desire calf implants for anatomical balance purposes. Men ordinarily seek to emphasize the appearance gained by calf muscle bulk. Bodybuilders seek improvement in the dynamics of the hard-to-develop muscle group.

A critical element in the determination of the right shape and size is the surgeon's skill. The surgeon assesses the correct proportions, sculpts properly, and places the implants. Typically, anyone in good health and average physical condition is a suitable candidate for calf implants.

How Does a Calf Implant Procedure Work?

Calf implants enhance the muscles by placing solid, soft silicone implants in overlying pockets of existing gastrocnemius muscles. Calf muscles are two-headed muscles. One is on the leg's upper outside. The other is on the leg's upper inside. Some patients want only the inner or outside muscle enlarged. Others want both muscles enhanced.

The surgeon places one or two implants on each leg, depending on the effect desired, through small incisions in creases behind the knee. A patient receives general anesthesia and lives face-down on the operating table. An incision is made in the fibrous muscle covering known as the fascia. The surgeon uses a special instrument that creates a pocket between the underlying muscle and the fascia. The pocket is large enough to fit the implant securely. Meticulous attention controls bleeding which is normally very minimal. An examination of the implants occurs before the closure of the fascia incision. The patient returns to a face-up position and goes to Recovery.

The healing period has short-term and long-term aspects. Short-term is surgical that lasts for a week or more following the procedure. The long-term aspect is cosmetic. It begins two to three weeks after surgery. As walking becomes normal and the skin stretches, a special scar preventing or lessening medication begins. No vigorous activities such as such as running, bicycling, or weight lifting for a month or two avoids complications.
