What Happens During a Dermatology Consultation?

The consultation procedure has two main steps, the interview and the physical examination.

  • During the interview, your dermatologist will discuss your medical history and ask you questions about your symptoms, previous or current treatments, medications and supplements. You will also be asked to answer questions about diet and other lifestyle factors such as smoking, your exercise regimen and sleep. In case your general physician has already performed a blood test, or a biopsy, make sure to bring these to your consultation

  • Your dermatologist will also perform a thorough physical examination, and check your whole body for signs of skin related illnesses.

What Can I Expect From a Dermatology Consultation?

It is always helpful to come prepared to your dermatology consultation with a few questions to ask your doctor. In addition to this, please bring a list of your current medications, products you are using on your skin and a summary of your medical history.

The main aim of your consultation is to understand your problems and issues, come up with probable causes and possible treatment plan. Your doctor will explain the pros and cons of the different treatments, their costs and expected results. By the end of the sessions, you should have a clear understanding of your problems and treatment options.

Depending on your case, the doctor may recommend further examinations such as:

  • A blood test

  • Skin swab: A skin swab is taken using a long cotton bud, this is swiped on the area to be tested and is then placed in a tube with a culture medium. This is then sent to the lab for processing.

  • Biopsy: A biopsy is a small medical procedure where a sample of the tissue from the problem area is taken for further examination. A biopsy is only suggested after initial tests show or point at possible abnormalities.

Your will be asked to come in for another appointment after the follow-up tests or treatments to discuss the next steps.
