Why is it called plastic surgery?

The word “plastic” in plastic surgery comes from the Greek word “plastikos” which translates into “pliable” or “malleable”. Since plastic surgery essentially involves moving and modelling tissue, this is where the name originates. The term has nothing to do with the material as this wasn’t produced until 1855.
