There are limits to full, plump lips. Larger-than-average lips sometimes appear out of proportion to the other facial features. Interference with talking, drinking, and eating is possible. For those who feel their lips are too large, consider lip reduction surgery as an option. Lip reduction surgery permanently reduces the size of the lips. The plastic surgery procedure is a lone operation or performed in combination with other facial cosmetic enhancements. Those other procedures include rhinoplasty and jaw and chin augmentation.

Deciding to undergo lip reduction is a serious decision not made lightly. The Consumer Guide to Plastic Surgery helps to increase chances of a successful, safe surgical experience. Scheduling a consultation with a plastic surgeon who is board-certified is the best way to make a determination of lip reduction surgery candidacy.

How Does Lip Reduction Surgery Work?

The surgeon examines the lips, takes a full medical history, listens to concerns, and assesses expectations. The surgeon decides if lip reduction is right for the patient. The details of the surgery, costs, risks, and recovery are part of the discussion with the surgeon. Information about medications taken, including nutritional supplements, is needed by the surgeon. Some medications and supplements interfere with healing and surgical results. Smoking affects circulation. A surgeon requires a patient to quit smoking before and after a lip reduction surgery to ensure proper healing and minimize risks. Lip reduction surgery, also known as reduction cheiloplasty, begins by using a local or regional anesthesia. The operation takes place in the surgeon's office. Completion takes about one hour. The surgeon makes an incision on the inside of the mouth along the length of the lip. He or she removes a tissue strip before closing the incision with sutures. Performing surgery on both lips at one time is possible.

Immediately following reduction cheiloplasty, the lips feel tight and sore. Mild to moderate pain for a few days is not uncommon. The surgeon prescribes painkillers to help with discomfort. The patient also receives instructions regarding over-the-counter pain medications safe to take. Swelling and bruising are lip reduction surgery expectations. Surgeons provide guidelines about resuming normal activity. Foods high in acid content such as tomatoes and oranges irritate the wound. Pureed foods are best immediately following surgery. Rinsing with antiseptic mouthwash is a frequent recommendation to prevent infection. Infection signs are pus around the site of the incision, redness, and excessive pain. Ten days following the surgery is the usual time span for removing stitches.
