Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery is a plastic surgery procedure that aims to make the breasts smaller and lighter. Feeling insecure about this part of your body can be distressing. You’re not alone in this though, and there’s been an increase in women visiting their doctor to enquire about a breast reduction. While this procedure is often undergone as a cosmetic breast surgery treatment, it can also be ideal for women whose breasts are causing them physical discomfort due to their size.

Qunomedical is here to assist you in choosing a high-quality breast reduction procedure at a fair price. With this article, we aim to provide you with a detailed guide, including reviews from former patients. On our subpages, you can learn more about breast reduction treatments in Germany or further away, such as in Turkey, where many breast reduction specialists practice.

The content has been reviewed for quality and accuracy to the best of our knowledge by Qunomedical and its Medical Board of Experts.

How Does Breast Reduction Surgery Work?

As previously mentioned, breast reduction, also often known as a reduction mammoplasty, can be carried out for cosmetic reasons, or to alleviate pain caused by the size of your breasts. However, while there are different reasons for undergoing the surgery, there are still a few common steps that you will take leading up to the treatment.

Initial Consultations

The first step in your breast reduction journey is to have some initial consultations with both your doctor and your Qunomedical Patient Manager. It’s important to use this time to discuss your desired outcomes from the treatment. Your doctor may ask you to describe what these are and the reasoning behind them, which will then allow you to set realistic goals together.

Your doctor will ask a few background questions to get a better understanding of what can be achieved. They will likely ask about:

  • Your medical history.

  • Your current lifestyle, including how much you work and how much physical activity you typically do.

  • Whether or not you have children or whether you intend to have any soon.

  • Whether you’re planning to lose a large amount of weight.

By building up this background knowledge, your doctor will have a better understanding of what the realistic expectations of your breast reduction surgery will be.

Planning Your Surgery

Prior to breast reduction surgery, your doctor will conduct a thorough examination of your breasts, in particular taking measurements to record the exact size, shape, and symmetry, as well as the size and position of your nipples and areolas.

Your doctor will also take photos and usually recommend a mammogram — a low energy X-ray that allows for examination and screening — to ensure they have accurate pre-surgery documentation of your breasts. This will also make it easier for them to detect any future changes.

What Does a Breast Reduction Surgery Involve?

Once the planning and preparation stages are complete, you’ll be ready to undergo your breast reduction treatment. This surgery is carried out under general anesthetic, meaning that you’ll be unconscious — or ‘asleep’ — throughout the entire procedure.

Breast reduction surgery involves four key steps:

1. Making the incisions: Incisions are made around the areola, down the breast to the breast crease, followed by an inverted T or anchor shaped incision around the whole area.

2. Repositioning your nipple: This follows the incision stage and is usually done while the breast is attached to a blood supply.

3. Removing excess fat: This is the stage that causes the reduction in size. Excess fat is removed, along with glandular tissue and skin, from your breasts.

4. Reshaping: After the excess fat and glandular tissue is removed, the remaining breast tissue is reshaped.

Your surgeon will likely make three different incisions per breast to remove excess tissue, fat, and skin. The skin located above the nipple will be used to reshape the breast and liposuction may also be used to contour the new shape.

Some doctors may also recommend a breast lift as an additional procedure alongside your breast reduction, for maximum aesthetic change. This is something that you can discuss with your doctor and Qunomedical Patient Manager prior to your treatment.

Breast Reduction Recovery: What Should I Expect Following My Treatment?

The breast reduction recovery phase is unique for each patient and can be dependent on the complexity of the surgery that you underwent. However, there are a few common steps. We’ve outlined these below.

  • Week One

In the week following your treatment, you may feel disoriented as a result of the general anesthetic and pain killers that you’re given. If you choose not to stay overnight at the hospital, it’s recommended that you make arrangements to have someone assist you with getting to your accommodation and to help with basic tasks in the days afterwards.

Immediately after breast reduction surgery, your breasts will be swollen and painful. Your treatment team will cover with gauze dressings and/or bandages. A tube will also be placed under each arm to drain excess blood and fluid. Additionally, showering and dressing will likely be painful and difficult at first, so having someone with you will help to minimize the discomfort of these activities.

For the first week following surgery, you’ll be taking medication for the pain and discomfort, as well as antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. Your doctor might also recommend an elastic surgical compression bra to protect the breasts.

  • Weeks 2-4

In the next few weeks, you should start to see a reduction in bruising and swelling and the surgical scars should also begin to heal.

Your breasts will still feel quite tender and sensitive, with bruising and swelling similarly to any other operation. Some patients also report a complete loss of sensation in the areolas, but this will fade over time.

After two weeks, your stitches will be removed or start to dissolve, depending on the type that your doctor gave you. You should also be able to return to work and resume light physical activity during this time.

  • Week Four and Beyond

By this point, you should feel relatively “back to normal”, but it’s important to still be mindful of the scale of the surgery that you underwent and take things easy. Scarring can be made worse if you push yourself too quickly, so for example, underwire bras, lifting heavy objects, and extreme physical activity should be avoided until discussed with your doctor.

Additionally, this phase is important in regards to assessing results. Try not to get too disheartened if you don’t see what you expected. It’s important to be patient as your breasts “fall” after surgery. They will slowly reduce in tightness, the new skin will settle, and it can take a few months for your breasts to arrive at their new permanent state.

In the majority of cases, the healing process will be complete approximately eight weeks after the breast reduction, but the full results can take up to a year to show.

Honestly amazed at the care and attention I received and still receive. Its so hard to find a company that you trust but from the start of just enquiring they couldn't be more helpful. They kept in touch with me, didn't pressure me but answered all my little questions. I had a breast reduction with lift and for me this was going to be life changing. I always said I didn't ever want to be scared and I honestly never was. Funda who is the translator was there for me every step of the way and came with me to all my after surgery care. I still speak to her now every second day. She's honestly amazing. One thing for sure is to make sure you take a companion with you. They will be with you in the hospital and the hotel. Complete life changer and best thing iv ever done for me. Would Highley recommend.

I have just come home from having Reduction Mammoplasty - keyhole pattern, NAC graft in Wroclaw as I had been fighting with the NHS for 2 years to have it done here in the UK without success. The treatment I received was second to none and only the very best of care and treatment were given. My pain and recovery were addressed promptly at each request and given with the utmost respect and compassion. I was a very nervous patient and the staff were very compassionate towards this especially. Nothing was too much for ANY of the staff at any time of the day. There is a language issue of course but the staff actually understand much of what you are saying and if not there is always body language which is universal and there is google. The pre assessment was thorough and all incidental findings were explained to me and were included in my paperwork for my own GP here at home. I was to have a 2 night stay due to the amount of surgery I was having but as there were a few complications this stretched out to 4 nights for my safety and comfort. The nurses were/are amazing and it felt very much like a little family as opposed to a clinical orientation. Everyone smiles and made me feel important and my daughter who came with me for support was treated well too. If I had a criticism it would only be the food but then NHS food isn't great either. The biggest issue is not knowing what you are being served with no choice offered but Marzena Zukowska (Mary) the English speaking coordinator was absolutely amazing and personally shopped for fruit for me, reading material and also accompanied us to the Pharmacy to ensure we got what we needed. Without Marys involvement in this process I cannot see it as being so successful. The private international side of KCM has only been going since 2006 but I can see it going from strength to strength in the future. It is a family concern with Dr Monika Passler, Cardiologist, Philip Passler CEO and Dominik Passler coordinator all playing a part in the patient pathway closely. I could have had this surgery a little cheaper in another country but I chose KCM and cannot recommend them highly enough for there expertise and patient care. My daughter is planning her surgery next year at KCM and l know that her care and treatment will be exemplary. If you are looking for a trustworthy, competent and whole body experience of care then you should chose KCM every time
