Chin Implants

A well-defined jawline is often seen as an attractive feature in any male or female. The chin plays an important part in this, and it can also help balance the face and provide a great profile. Unfortunately, we are not all naturally blessed with a strong chin. Chin implants have been designed to improve the shape and structure of your chin, and they may also tighten any sagging skin along the neckline, giving you a profile you are more happy with aesthetically.

What Is Chin Implant Surgery?

We make first impressions with our faces, and so it is important to feel confident and self-assured in the way we look. If you are insecure about a particular feature on your face, it can affect your self-confidence and even alter the way you live your life. If your chin is the or one of the main issues causing you to be unhappy with your face, you can find a simple solution in chin implant surgery. Chin implants are designed for those who need to add shape or structure to their chin. A small implant is inserted into the chin to enhance the area and add definition. This will often change the overall look of the face, either adding balance to the other features or framing the face with a strong jawline. You can also combine the surgery with a host of other facial surgeries in order to achieve a look you can be happy with and confident in.

How Does Chin Implant Surgery Work?

Chin implants require a fairly straightforward and quick procedure to insert. They are normally implanted under a general anaesthetic, so you will be put to sleep during the surgery, which normally lasts up to an hour. You will usually be allowed to go home after surgery, but this can vary from patient to patient depending on the outcome of their surgery and the effects of the anaesthetic. This is a typical step-by-step procedure:

1. Your surgeon will make incisions inside your mouth on either side of the lower lip. 2. Using their surgical tools, the surgeon will create a pocket within your chin for the implant. 3. The implant is placed into your chin. 4. The incisions are stitched shut.

Are There Different Types of Chin Implant Surgery?

There are different types of chin implants. Most are made from silicone, but there are also versions made from polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene and acellular dermal matrix. The procedure described above is the main type of chin implant surgery, but there are a couple of other options when it comes to increasing the profile of the chin. The first is to cut some bone from the lower jawline to use as the implant. The second is a non-surgical option, which involves using injectable dermal fillers to give structure to the area. This is also a non-permanent option.

What Should I Expect From a Chin Implant Surgery?

Many patients choose to have chin implants because they are extremely unhappy with the appearance of their face. You might be suffering from low self-confidence because of your profile and jawline, or you might feel you need to add balance to your other features, and that this could be achieved with a stronger chin. Chin implants will help harmonise the face and give your jawline the strength and structure you want.

  • When you undergo your first consultation with your surgeon, he/she will be able to address any concerns you might have about your face, discussing any areas you are unhappy with and giving you the best solutions to ensure you are satisfied with your final result. This might involve combining your chin implant surgery with other procedures, such as nose surgery, cheek implants or dermal fillers.

  • Your surgeon will also talk you through any risks and side effects associated with the procedure, making sure you understand the process and the recovery time before you decide to undergo the surgery. Chin implant surgery is carried out under a general anaesthetic. You should be aware that this might make you drowsy and disoriented when you wake up, and you might feel sore once the anaesthetic begins to wear off. This will be controlled using medication if needed, which you will also be able to take home with you to prevent any further pain.

  • You might experience some swelling and soreness once you get home after surgery. You will probably be limited to soft foods through a straw as the incision will have been made inside your mouth. Any swelling in the area should subside a week after the surgery, by which time you should be able to see the full effects of your procedure. That said, it can take up to six weeks to see the final result.
