What Is Dimple Creation Surgery?

Dimple creation surgery has become increasingly popular in recent years and there has been a huge rise in those wanting to create permanent dimples on their cheeks. Natural dimples occur due to a small defect or opening in a cheek known as the buccinator muscle. Dimple creation procedure or Dimpleplasty, is a process whereby the surgeon recreates the natural way in which a dimple is formed.
How Does Dimple Creation Surgery Work?
Dimple creation surgery usually takes between 10 to 20 minutes. It is a fairly straightforward procedure that is treated as a day surgery, so you should be able to leave the clinic soon after you have undergone treatment. The dimple creation procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel any discomfort or pain. Here is a step by step procedure detailing the surgery:
1. A biopsy instrument will be placed against the buccinator muscle (the inner cheek) on the inside of the mouth. 2. A circular incision is made in the cheek muscles. 3. Tissue is removed to form a shadow on the outside of the skin. 4. The incision is stitched shut. This leaves a circular shadow, or a dimple, on the outside of the cheek.
Are There Different Types of Dimple Creation Surgery?
This particular dimple creation treatment refers to the creation of cheek dimples, but dimples can actually be created in other areas of the body also. Chin dimple creation surgery: also known as the 'cleft chin' is a somewhat uncommon facial dimple which is formed by a connection in the jaw structure. Chin dimples or 'designer dimples', are less commonly requested than cheek dimples and are wanted mostly by men.
Back dimple creation surgery: often referred to as 'Venus Dimples' (after Venus the Roman Goddess of Beauty), these dimples are found in the lower part of the back. They are caused by how your pelvic bones are connected and if you don't have them already, there is little you can do with regards to diet or exercise to achieve them. Back dimple creation surgery is the least requested dimple creation surgery but it has become more increasingly popular over the past few years. Venus dimples are often associated with looking youthful and healthy.
What Should I Expect From Dimple Creation Surgery?
Most patients choose dimple creation surgery because they feel that dimples will improve their appearance, whether they want to enhance their smile or add some character to their face. Some patients also feel that cheek dimples will make their face appear slimmer. Dimples are often considered an attractive and desirable trait, and patients that opt for dimple creation surgery wish to create this trait permanently on their face. During your consultation with your surgeon, you will discuss where on your face you would like the dimples to be placed. With guidance from your doctor you can choose the final positioning of the dimples.
Dimple creation surgery is a relatively straight-forward and risk-free surgical procedure, but, as with any surgery you must make sure you are suitably informed and you understand any risks and side effects before electing for the procedure. Prior to surgery, you will be given a local anaesthetic. This will prevent any pain experienced while the procedure is being carried out. Once the incision is made inside the cheek, it will be closed using dissolvable sutures. These sutures will dissolve within two weeks of your procedure. As the incision is made on the inner cheek, no scar will be visible on your face.
After your dimple creation surgery, you might experience mild discomfort and in the days following the surgery, you may see some minor bruising and swelling. You will likely be given some mild pain medication to control this, although most patients find they don't require it after treatment. Over time, any pain and swelling will fade - the recovery period is actually considered relatively rapid in comparison to other cosmetic surgery procedures. Once your cheeks have fully healed, the cheek muscle will connect with the cheek skin, forming natural looking dimples.
