How Does FUT Work?

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is a hair transplantation technique. During the procedure, a strip of skin with hair from the back of your head will be removed. This will be the donor area, from where the hair follicles will be extracted.

Here are the main steps of the treatment:

1. Initial Consultation

As is the case with most treatments, you should have an initial consultation with a doctor. This is necessary to firstly, determine your eligibility for the procedure and to assess the amount of grafts you require. During your consultation, you should talk about your goals for the procedure, discuss your medical history with your doctor and have your current health status evaluated. Once you choose to go ahead with the procedure, you will undergo a blood test to rule out any medical conditions that might be a hindrance to the procedure.

2. Surgery

  • You will receive local anaesthesia. Following this, the doctor will remove a strip of hair from your donor area, usually the back of your head, or an area where hair is still thick and strong. Then, the surgeon will stitch the area together, leaving behind a small linear scar.

  • The strip of hair will be dissected into grafts, which contains around 1-2 hair follicles each.

  • In order to transplant these hairs into your recipient areas, the surgeon will make very small incisions on your balding areas, in a process known as canal opening and insert the grafts there.

  • The procedure ends with the application of a disinfection solution to your head and a bandaging of your donor area.

3. Post-OP

After your procedure (minimum a day later), you will have a check-up with your doctor, and will receive guidelines to follow post treatment.

What Should I Expect From This Procedure?

One of the most important things to know about a hair transplant procedure is the shock-loss phenomenon, which occurs between weeks 2-8. This is completely normal and is part of a natural process. Most of your transplanted hair will grow back after 6 months. You will have a small scar following the procedure, this is not very visible and will be covered by your hair over time. Your results depend greatly on your adherence to the post-op guidelines given by your doctor.

You may also be eligible for a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), a newer and more advanced technique that does not leave behind any noticeable scar.
