Urology Consultation Quick Details

WHO IS THIS FOR

  • Individuals with issues with their kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra.

  • Men that have issues with their reproductive organs.

TREATMENT DURATION

  • Approximately an hour.

What Happens During a Urology Consultation?

The consultation procedure has a few main steps, such as:

Interview

  • This is the main aspect of any consultation. You may be asked to fill out a few questionnaires regarding your symptoms and give in a urine sample depending on your woes.

  • Your urologist will then discuss your medical history, inquire about the symptoms and also ask about any previous treatments and medications. Lifestyle factors such as your diet, exercise regimen, smoking will be reviewed. Whether or not you have any current conditions, and the list of all your medications will also be discussed.

  • Lastly, after performing a physical examination such as a digital rectal exam, a pelvic exam or cystoscopy and reviewing your urine sample, the urologist will inform you of the next steps. You may be asked to undergo blood tests or imaging tests before a final diagnosis and a treatment plan is made.

Further tests

Depending on the nature of your physical examination, and the results from it, your doctor may recommend further tests. This may include an ultrasound, an MRI or a CT scan. If a urine sample has not been taken, you may be asked to do so.

What Can I Expect From a Urology Consultation?

There are a few points that are important to keep in mind during your appointment:

  • Please come prepared with a list of all your current medications and a summary of your medical history. In addition, write down all the questions you may have for your urologist. This is to make sure you get the most out of your appointment.

  • The consultation is only for understanding your symptoms, finding the cause and a possible treatment plan. You will not get treated during a consultation.

Depending on your case, the doctor may recommend further examinations such as:

  • Biopsy: A biopsy is a short medical procedure where a sample of the tissue from the problem area is taken for further examination. A biopsy is only suggested after initial tests show or point at possible abnormalities.

You will be asked to come in for another appointment after the follow-up tests or treatments to discuss the next steps.
