The Top 11 Celebrity Nose Jobs: Who's Gone Under the Knife?

When it comes to A-list plastic surgery treatments, a celebrity nose job might not seem like such a headline-hitting procedure. However, nose jobs — otherwise known as a rhinoplasty — have become commonplace amongst the rich and famous, with some choosing to keep quiet about undergoing the procedure, while others are open about having surgery.

But, what exactly is a rhinoplasty? Who are some of the notable names that have had one, and why is this type of plastic surgery becoming so popular amongst famous people? And is it just celebrities with big noses, or are there other reasons? We’ve tried to answer all of this, and more, to get a better understanding of the ever-growing phenomenon that is the celebrity nose job.

What Is a Nose Job?

First things first, it’s important to clarify exactly what a nose job is. Known medically as a rhinoplasty, this cosmetic surgery procedure aims to alter or adjust the shape of your nose. Most celebrity nose jobs are carried out for cosmetic purposes, however, the treatment can also be undertaken for medical reasons.

A rhinoplasty can be carried out as either a closed or open surgery. Essentially, open rhinoplasties are used in cases where more significant alterations are required and they usually result in a slightly longer recovery period. Closed rhinoplasties are less invasive and work effectively when only slight adjustments are needed. There’s also a variety of methods used for rhinoplasty surgery, each of which aims to tackle specific issues.

1. Rebecca Adlington

Our first celebrity rhinoplasty mention is British Olympian Rebecca Adlington. Despite winning two gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics - making her the UK’s first Olympic swimming champion since 1988 - Adlington was subject to abuse by internet trolls who mocked the appearance of her nose. This led her to pursue rhinoplasty surgery, eventually having the size of her nose reduced and a bump in the bridge removed. While it’s extremely regrettable that Adlington was repeatedly targeted and faced constant online abuse, she did acknowledge that she felt more comfortable with her looks following the surgery.

2. Jennifer Aniston

Celebrities don’t come much more famous than Friends star Jennifer Aniston. While it was always a running joke in the New York sitcom that her character, Rachel, had undergone a nose job, Aniston actually confirmed that she’d had the treatment herself. The ‘Jennifer Aniston nose job’ rumours were confirmed in 2007 when she explained that her rhinoplasty was done to correct a deviated septum — one of the rare celebrity nose jobs that wasn’t done for cosmetic reasons.

3. Ryan Gosling

While media coverage of celebrity nose jobs, and celebrity plastic surgery in general, consistently focuses on female figures, there are definitely notable male mentions too. Canadian actor and The Notebook star Ryan Gosling reportedly underwent rhinoplasty surgery to straighten the bridge of his nose. It’s been alleged that Gosling had the treatment in the early 2000s, before his entrance into the public spotlight.

4. Lisa Kudrow

The second Friends star in our list, Lisa Kudrow surprised the public by revealing that she’d had a rhinoplasty when she was just 16 years old. She hailed the surgery as 'life altering', explaining that it had helped her to feel more confident in her body and appearance, before starting at a new high school. Kudrow described the results of her nose job as a 'good, good, good change'.

5. Robert Pattinson

Known for his performance in the Twilight series, Robert Pattinson is another well-known celebrity nose job case. It’s been reported that prior to getting the role as Edward Cullen in Twilight, Pattinson had a rhinoplasty to adjust both the bridge and tip of his nose. While Pattinson himself has never confirmed that he underwent the surgery, before and after photos certainly reveal a difference in shape in these areas.

6. Ferne McCann

The Ferne McCann nose job reveal came to light back in August 2016 when she announced live on TV that she’d had the surgery. She openly and honestly described how life-long insecurities that she’d felt because of the size and shape of her nose — as well as the online abuse that she’d received — led her towards pursuing a rhinoplasty. McCann had subtle yet effective changes made, mainly to remove the bump on her nose and straighten out the bridge.

7. Dianna Agron

Glee star Dianna Agron has been open about her experience with rhinoplasty surgery. Perhaps this is unsurprising though, as similarly to Jennifer Aniston’s nose job experience, Agron underwent the procedure for medical, rather than cosmetic, reasons. Amazingly, she actually broke her nose twice, once when she was at high school and subsequently while on a concert tour with Glee. After the second break, she decided to seek treatment, being told that she had a deviated septum which was restricting her breathing capabilities. She decided to undergo rhinoplasty surgery and has been reaping the benefits ever since.

8. Cameron Diaz

As if a double nose break wasn’t bad enough, the Cameron Diaz nose job story somehow manages to top this. The Hollywood icon revealed that she has broken her nose an incredible four times, with the latest one happening during a surfing accident back in 2006. Diaz explained how these injuries accumulated until she found it almost impossible to breathe through her nose. Thankfully, her rhinoplasty surgery was successful in managing to correct the deviations and allowing her to breathe through her nose normally again.

9. Janet Jackson

The Jackson family’s historic and ongoing relationship with plastic surgery is something that’s been well documented throughout the media. However, while Janet Jackson has denied having various plastic surgery treatments, she has acknowledged undergoing rhinoplasty surgery. Her nose job appears to have targeted the bridge, tip, and nostrils, making them thinner and upturning the tip slightly.

10. Kaley Cuoco

Not all celebrity nose jobs are speculation. The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco for example, hasn’t been one to hold back in revealing her experience with plastic surgery. She admitted openly to having had a rhinoplasty as well as breast augmentation surgery. Cuoco has been honest in why she decided to pursue cosmetic surgery, arguing that, “I don’t think you should do it for a man or anyone else, but if it makes you feel confident, that’s amazing.”

11. Patrick Dempsey

Grey’s Anatomy actor Patrick Dempsey explained that his rhinoplasty surgery was carried out to fix deviated septum caused by a hockey injury that happened when he was a teenager. Dempsey said the nose job helped to open up his airways but it also appears to have slimmed the bridge of his nose as well.

It’s clear from this selection of celebrity nose jobs that this type of plastic surgery is becoming increasingly popular amongst the Hollywood elite - and it's not just actors with big nose profiles; like many people getting work done, the reasons aren't restricted to being merely cosmetic. Similar trends have been seen with other cosmetic surgeries like hair transplants too. Thinking about it, this is hardly surprising. The popularity of the nose job has been increasing among the general public too, thanks mainly to lowering rhinoplasty costs and access to high-quality doctors abroad. For celebrities, the decision to pursue a rhinoplasty is often based on the same foundations as the rest of us. As such a prominent part of our face, it’s understandable that we want to ensure that our nose is exactly the shape and size that we want it to be.
