Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) procedures, also known as otorhinolaryngology, are designed to treat conditions of the head and neck, the ear, nose, and throat regions. Among the conditions that ENT doctors can address are sinusitis, nose infections or injuries, ear infections, vertigo, head and neck pain, swallowing disorders, tonsillitis or adenoids.

How Do Ear, Nose, And Throat Procedures Work?

There are different types of procedures that ENT doctors can perform, including sinus surgery, corrective breathing surgery and tonsil/adenoid removal. Typically, ear surgery is used to correct defects causing hearing loss. The procedures include stapedectomy (partial or total removal of the stapes, a bone located in the middle of the ear), tympanoplasty (reconstruction of the eardrum), and cochlear implants (a device that stimulates the auditory nerve enabling earing). Throat surgery includes tonsil or adenoid removal. Tonsils and adenoids are masses of lymph tissue that may get chronically infected and their removal can relieve infection recurrence or breathing problems. Nose surgery includes sinus surgery and septoplasty, the correction of a deviated nasal septum that often causes chronic nasal congestion. As for most medical procedures, before surgery you may have to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, and on the day of the surgery, you will not be able to eat or drink. Depending on the type of surgery performed, you might be administered local anesthesia, and general anesthesia for more complex surgical procedures.
