Hair Transplant Surgery: Treatments and Techniques Available
What Is a Hair Transplant?
Simply put, a hair transplant is a minimally-invasive, outpatient (no overnight stay) surgical procedure for people suffering from hair loss.
Hair restoration can permanently restore the hair of men and women who are experiencing partial baldness by transplanting hair follicles into balding or thinning areas.
What Are the Different Types of Hair Transplant Procedures?
There are lots of different types of hair transplant procedures currently available to restore natural hair for those experiencing hair loss. The right one for you will depend on what type of hair loss you have and how many grafts you want. If you chose Qunomedical as your partner for your procedure, this can be discussed with your Patient Manager.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT, Follicular Unit Strip Surgery, Strip Harvesting)
FUT was developed in the 1950s, it involves a surgeon removing a strip of skin from the donor area (usually the back of the patient’s head) under local anaesthesia, dividing it into smaller grafts, and then implanting them into place on the recipient sites.
With this method, the patient has a permanent scar in the place where the scalp was removed, and the recovery time is around two weeks.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE, FUE harvesting)
The FUE technique is one of the most popular hair transplantation methods as it’s not invasive and has minimal downtime. The FUE method involves a specialist manually harvesting hair follicles from a donor area (usually the back of your head) under local anaesthesia. These follicles are then transplanted to where your hair loss is to create a natural, uniform look.
Some surgeons use ARTAS for an FUE hair transplant, a robotic surgical technique that uses algorithms to detect the most viable hairs for transplantation.
With this technique, the donor area is shaved down and healing takes place in under five days.
Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)
Direct hair implantation, or DHI, is a minimally-invasive hair transplantation technique that is used to restore hair in individuals with partial baldness.
DHI differs from FUE when it comes to implanting the grafts into the recipient area. The FUE technique requires the creation and opening of canals before the implantation can take place, with the surgeon then having to implant the grafts manually. DHI instead involves the use of a special tool called a Choi Implanter Pen. Essentially, this tool allows the surgeon to implant the extracted grafts straightaway, without having to go through the process of creating the canals. This is important, as it reduces the risk of hair follicles becoming damaged following the extraction phase. The Choi Implanter Pen also has a very fine tip, which gives the specialist the ability to be a lot more precise when it comes to making the incisions and implanting the follicles.
These methods vary because there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to hair restoration procedures since there’s no ‘typical’ hair transplant patient.
How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost?
Unfortunately, there's no simple answer to how much a hair transplant costs. We even wrote an entire Hair Transplant Cost Guide to cover this topic.
The cost of a hair transplant depends on the number of grafts required for each individual and where the procedure is performed. The difference in pricing for different countries is usually due to different living costs and labor costs, rather than quality.
Below are starting prices across countries for a 2000 graft hair transplant utilizing the FUE method at a high-quality hospital. These prices are not fixed or guaranteed and may vary based on a number of different factors.

What Are the Results of a Hair Transplant?
Results vary from patient to patient, as they’re dependent on hairlines and hair coverage prior to the treatment. Depending on the aims of the hair transplant surgery, successful results can range from the slight lowering of a hairline, to complete coverage in a previously bald area.
Results become noticeable after each growth cycle (typically every six weeks). Within the first cycle after the procedure, the hair follicles should start generating new hair growth, however, this won’t be visible initially. Throughout the following cycles the hair should become thicker and although these results are often visible, the full scope of a hair transplant usually occurs between 12–18 months after treatment.
For optimal results, patients are encouraged to carefully follow the surgeon’s post-operative care guidelines. Most surgeons also recommend things like minimizing alcohol consumption and smoking in the weeks following the procedure, as this can contribute to poor graft survival. Overall, success rates for both FUE and DHI are around 95%.
