Medical Travel Guide - Bangkok

Thailand’s capital and most populous city, Bangkok is one of the most visited destinations globally. Its air pollution, heavy traffic and packed streets may not give you the best impression at first, but there is more to the city that will give you all the feels; charming river cruises, intense flavour combinations and irrepressibly smiley Thais are going to show you the authenticity of a truly cosmopolitan city where old and new uniquely amalgamate. Most visitors travel to Bangkok between November and mid January, when temperatures are cooler compared to the rest of the year (and that means, just below 20°C at night), but the city has tons to offer all year round.
City of Angels. Locals will hardly call their capital city Bangkok, unless they are talking to tourists. In Thai it is rather known as Krung Thep, which, in fact, roughly translates to City of Angels. Contradictions are all over the place: recently-built shopping malls stand next to century-old village homes and high-end restaurants on the top of skyscrapers overlook street food carts.
Street life. Bangkok’s life is mostly conducted on the street; to get to know how locals live, take a walk in buzzy Banglamphu and explore hidden markets along the way. The city’s vibrant nightlife can be found anywhere between Khao San Road, Soi Rambuttri and Thonglor and visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to trendy bars and hip clubs.
Thai impressiveness. You can’t visit Bangkok without admiring its magnificent temples, and you certainly can’t miss them. Besides being a touristic attraction, they play a major role in Buddhist traditions and their impressive architecture will have you gaze at them in awe. It is recommended to plan a visit early in the morning when it’s cooler and less crowded; the most famous temples include Loha Prasat, Wat Arun and Wat Chanasongkram.
The vaccinations to consider before going to Thailand are those for tetanus, typhoid fever and hepatitis A and B. Also make sure your tetanus-diphtheria- polio vaccination is updated. Consider discussing your options with your doctor at least 4 to 6 weeks before traveling anyway. Take care with your personal, food and water hygiene. Choose bottled water over tap water and treat street food very cautiously; it is essential to store food correctly - especially in tropical areas like Thailand - and hygiene standards are not always followed. Avoid eating raw vegetables: if not washed properly, they can be a dangerous source of infectious diseases.

Getting around Bangkok
Bangkok’s hectic life reflects in its busy and highly trafficked streets, still taxi is the most comfortable way to get around and it’s relatively cheap (prices start at 35 baht).
Public transportation includes the Bangkok transit System (BTS) that connects most places of interest in the city, the Mass Rapid Transit network (MRT) with 2 metro lines covering 18 stations, and busses; Bangkok’s bus system is pretty extensive, though consider that it can be rather complicated to understand for Bangkok first-time visitors.
Reaching local attractions from our partner clinics is pretty convenient as they are either well connected via public transport or with a short cab ride.
