Medical Travel Guide - Kraków

Dating back to the 7th century, Kraków is one of Poland’s oldest cities and the second largest in the country. Located on the Vistula River, its ancient history is rooted in its magnificent architecture and just by walking down a city street, layers of history unfold before you.

Mythological flair. Many Polish cities are surrounded by tales and mythology, but only Kraków is believed to have been founded on the defeat of a dragon. Legend has it that Krakus, a Polish prince, settled at Wawel Castle after fighting and killing a wild dragon, whose lair was at the foot of Wawel Hill. Here the prince founded the city of Kraków. On visiting Wawel Castle, you certainly cannot miss the statue of the defeated dragon and the bones of pleistocene creatures hanging on a chain at the entrance of the cathedral.

Historical core. Kraków’s defensive walls were built in the 13th century. While a large part of them was pulled down during the 19th century, it is still possible to admire the main city gate, Brama Florianska. Entering the city through the gate, you’ll walk along the Royal Road to reach the city’s Grand Square, Rynek Glowny. Kraków’s medieval presence is still well preserved and its Old Town is probably the city’s major drawcard for tourists.

Cultural mix. Kazimierz represented the center of Jewish life in Kraków for many centuries, before its destruction during World War II. Today the neighborhood is full of hip bars and art galleries, thanks to a major rebound in the early 1990s. Oskar Schindler’s Factory - located in the former metal item factory of the city - is today home to the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Historical Museum of the City. Many people also go on a day trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau, a Nazi concentration camp active during World War II, that is now a memorial and a museum.

Health tips

In addition to the boosters and vaccinations every traveller should keep updated according to his/her own medical needs, there is no particular vaccination to recommend when traveling to Poland. Make sure you refer also to routine vaccination courses and boosters as advised by your health provider and country.
