A hair transplant has the ability to restore lost hair for both men and women. The treatment aims to tackle partial baldness by transplanting hair follicles into bald or thinning areas. With its growing popularity, we’ve taken the time to answer some of the most common hair transplant questions asked by people considering the treatment.
When Should I Consider Having a Hair Transplant?
Since it’s difficult to assess the long-term stability of donor hair and the extent of future hair loss when patients are young, it’s best to wait until you’re at least 25 to have a hair transplant. Eligibility for this treatment is also dependent on your medical history and the type of hair loss that you’re experiencing. The Norwood Scale is a good place to start for determining the degree and severity of your hair loss. Upon your first consultations with Qunomedical and your doctor, we’ll work together to determine whether a hair restoration treatment would be suitable.
How Do I Get Started?
Qunomedical can help you to get started with your hair transplant journey. Once you contact us, one of our Patient Managers will be in touch to answer some initial questions and get to know you. They’ll also ask you to send us some pictures of your head, from the front, back, left side, and right side, which will allow your doctor to evaluate your hair loss and determine whether a hair restoration treatment would work for you. Using this information we can then provide you with treatment options that are individually tailored for you.
How Do I Find a Doctor That's Right for Me?
This is a hair transplant question that is often asked by potential patients. At Qunomedical, we can present you with a worldwide choice of highly-experienced hair transplant doctors. All of the doctors that we present to have been thoroughly vetted, with a focus on quality and affordability. When you’re in the process of choosing a doctor, you can make use of our doctor profiles. Here you can have a look at experience, accreditations, and reviews from past patients to get an idea of who you would like to perform your treatment. Dr. Mehmet Erdogan, MD for example, is a leading figure in the industry. He’s performed over 2500 treatments and is the co-founder of the well-renowned Smile Hair Clinic in Istanbul.
How Much Does It Cost?
This is one of the most common hair transplant questions. With Qunomedical, you’ll be able to choose between high-quality hair transplant doctors, at home and abroad. Travelling abroad for treatment can have a big effect on price, without sacrificing on quality. For example, the average price for a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant in Turkey is €1950, compared with €6940 in the US, and €7100 in the UK. Other locations such as Poland and Hungary also represent significant savings with average prices coming in at €2900 and €2300 respectively. For more detailed information on pricing, check out our hair transplant cost guide.
How Do I Schedule an Appointment?
If you decide you’d like to go ahead with your treatment, we’ll check to see if your chosen doctor has an appointment available on your preferred date. Our team can also help you to meet your doctor without stepping outside the house. Our doctor video consultations are completely free and available to anyone who is interested in booking a treatment. Once your treatment is confirmed by your doctor you can then book your flights. We’ll pass on your flight details to the clinic and send you a list of hotels in the vicinity, as well as any important information and contact numbers. Remember: Your Patient Manager is available in case you need anything while you’re there.
How Does the Treatment Work?
During the treatment you’ll be given local anesthetic to numb the area of your head that your treatment team will work on. Depending on the size of the area you’re having treated the procedure will take between 4-8 hours. There are a variety of different hair transplant techniques used, however the most common, innovative, and popular method is FUE. Unlike the alternative method Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) — which involves removing a strip of the scalp where follicles are plentiful — FUE takes each follicular unit and removes it one at a time. This is a more time consuming process, but one that leaves minimal scarring on the part of your head in which the hair follicles were extracted from. Recovery times for FUE also tend to be quicker than for FUT.
How Long Do I Have to Stay in Hospital?
Hair restoration surgery is an outpatient procedure, meaning that you’ll be able to leave the hospital immediately after your treatment. For those who choose to have their hair transplant abroad, we recommend that you stay in a nearby hotel for at least a couple of nights as you’ll have a check-up the day after your treatment. It’s common for your scalp to be very tender immediately after the procedure and you may need to take painkillers for a few days. You may also be prescribed an antibiotic or an anti-inflammatory drug and you’ll have to wear bandages for a day or two.
When Can I Return to My Regular Routine?
You can resume light routine activities two days after your transplant and you can go back to work after three days. By this point the swelling has usually subsided but there’s typically still visible redness at the recipient sites which normally fades around 10–14 days after the procedure. We’ll give you a call to check on you a few days after the treatment. A month on from your hair transplant is when you can exercise again, including swimming and bathing. Soft hats can be worn 10 days after treatment, however hard hats should only be worn a month after your transplant.
What Can I Expect After the Treatment?
Common hair transplant questions are often related to results and what to expect after they’ve had the treatment. Following surgery the transplanted hair will fall out within 2-3 weeks. This is completely normal and not a sign that the procedure has failed. You should start to notice new growth within a few months. One side effect of the treatment can be shock loss, which is when hair in areas that weren’t treated falls out. Although this can be worrying, it’s just temporary. Not all transplanted follicles grow new hair, but around 85-95% of transplanted roots will. Follow your surgeon’s post-operative care guidelines and you’ll see the results within a few months. Around 60% of new hair growth should be seen between 6-9 months after the treatment and by the 12 month mark the full results are usually visible. However, it’s worth noting that for some patients, it can take up to 18 months to see the complete results.
