Pre-Op Instructions for Dental Implants

Dental implants have helped thousands of patients to restore the health and stability of their mouth. Whether you have missing teeth, damaged teeth, or are unable to wear dentures, these artificial replacements provide a long-lasting solution.

Around 98% of dental implant surgeries are considered to be successful. Still, the thought of undergoing any kind of oral surgery can be daunting. By following a few straightforward pre-operative steps though, you’ll help to ensure that your treatment runs as smoothly as possible.

Please note that these pre-op instructions for dental implants aim to give you useful information on how to best prepare for your treatment. Our guidelines are not intended to replace any medical advice provided to you by your dentist.

Preparing for Dental Implant Surgery

Before undergoing treatment, many prospective patients want to know how to prepare for dental implant surgery. While there’s not a great deal of preparation needed for this dental treatment, there are a few important points to be aware of.

The pre-op instructions for dental implants that we have provided below are relevant for all patients, whether you’re having a single implant fitted, or are undergoing either the all-on-4 or all-on-6 technique. This guidance reflects common recommendations from reputable dentists but we also advise that you discuss any specific pre-op instructions with your dentist.

Dental Implant Pre-Op Don’ts

  • Don’t drink alcohol during the week leading up to your treatment.

Why? Alcohol acts as a vasodilator, meaning it opens blood vessels. Simply put, this can cause an increased amount of bleeding during your dental implant surgery.

  • Don’t smoke in the week running up to your surgery.

Why? Nicotine can increase the risk of infection during oral surgery.

  • Don’t eat or drink for six hours before your surgery if you choose to have IV sedation.

Why? Anaesthesia causes a temporary relaxation of your body’s reflexes. If your stomach is not empty then there may be a risk of vomiting during your surgery.

  • Don’t take aspirin or medications that contain aspirin in the week leading up to your dental implant surgery.

Why? Aspirin can dilute the blood causing an increased amount of bleeding during the procedure.

Dental Implant Pre-Op Do’s

  • Let your dentist know about any allergies or health conditions that you have.

  • Tell your dentist about any regular medications that you take.

  • Plan a few days off work to give yourself time to recover following treatment.

  • If you choose to have local anaesthesia for your treatment, you can eat a small breakfast on the day of your surgery.

  • Inform your dentist if you’re suffering from a cold or flu in the days running up to your treatment.

Pre-Op Instructions for Dental Implants: A Quick Checklist

Whether you’re travelling abroad to somewhere like Turkey or Germany for your dental implants, or are having them fitted locally, there are a few steps to bear in mind. Following these will help to make sure that your treatment runs as stress-free as possible.

✔ On the day of your surgery, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes like a T-shirt or a sleeveless shirt and comfortable shoes.

✔ If you’re planning to buy any painkillers or other medications abroad, it might be worth adding a checked-in bag as you won’t be able to carry them in your hand luggage.

✔ Make sure that your passport has at least six months of validity. This is especially important now for UK citizens travelling within the EU following Brexit.

✔ Print both your booking confirmation and your emergency contact details.

✔ Pack any relevant medical records or test results.

✔ Bring a city guide if you’re planning to explore the surroundings before or after your treatment.

✔ Double-check your local governmental authority website about any new travel advice or visa requirements.

✔ If you’re going to be paying with a credit card abroad, make sure that you let your bank know that you’re going to be carrying out transactions overseas.
